HLC Brain Booster Award 2020

Short Animation Course

Scientific research in the Heart Lung Center Leiden:

The central theme of the Hart Lung Center Leiden is clinical care, divided into different care paths with integrated research and education activities.

Their research activities are aimed towards the heart, with a focus on arrhythmias, atherosclerosis and genetics, congenital heart defects, valve abnormalities, and ventricular dysfunction and heart failure; and they are aimed towards the lungs as well, including the pathogenesis and treatment of lung cancer, interstitial lung disease and emphysema in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and α-1-antitrypsin deficiency.

Award for the best out-of-the-box idea for personal development within the field of science.

Research is all about personal development as well. The researchers of the Heart Lung Center in Leiden were challenged to think out of the box for projects that could help them both on a personal and scientific level. They were asked to give a 1 minute pitch to convince the judges of their idea.

I participated in this contest and my idea consisted of learning how to professionally use Adobe After Effects to animate scientific discoveries in popularizing animations for effective communication with the general public. I ended up being one of the three winners of the Brain Booster Award and was awarded 1000 EUR to carry out my idea.
