Roadtrip Iceland
Summer 2016: Iceland
For our summer holiday we went to a country my mom always wanted to visit: Iceland. We did a roundtrip by car which took us along the 4 cardinal points of Iceland: South Iceland with its spectacular coastline and beautiful glacier areas, the impressive fjord region of East Iceland, the volcanic phenomena of the Mývatn area in the north and finally the fairytale and mystical peninsula Snaefellsnes. With this we got a complete overview of the most important natural phenomena and the many contrasting landscapes Iceland has to offer.

Travel Diary
Thursday June 9:
After our direct flight from Brussels, we received a rental car at the airport. On the way to Reykjavik we passed possibly the most famous hot spring bath in the world: the Blue Lagoon. In the middle of lava fields lies this futuristic-looking hot spring bath. We wandered around the area and continued our way to the capital of Iceland to explore the city a little.
Friday June 10
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge separates the American continental plate from the European one. This fault line, which gave rise to the island, lies right on the Þingvellir National Park. That makes this place in Iceland an absolutely unique location. Moreover, it is also one of the few places on our planet where you can clearly see this fault line and easily visit it. This rupture still literally tears the country in two today. The gap that was created between the two tectonic plates is growing by 2 cm every year!
A little further in this area is the famous geyser area. Strokkur spews boiling water into the air at regular intervals. We also found Iceland's most beautiful waterfall Gullfoss here, 'the golden waterfall. The water crashes into a canyon, creating a large amount of spray. When the sun focuses its rays on this, a beautiful rainbow soon arises!
